This non-excavated Federal belt plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the brass accoutrement’s face shows a clear “US”. Face shows only small dings and has a nice mellow patina. Lead filled back retains 100% of lead fill. This is the style with brass “arrow” hooks.
Plate is attached to a regulation bridle leather enlistedman’s waist belt. The belt measures approximately 42” long by 2” wide. Leather remains very supple; finish exhibits moderate crazing.
This belt and buckle came to us with TWO percussion cap pouches on it…for the soldier who didn’t want to run out of caps.
The first cap pouch is the pattern that has the integral closing tab as an extension of the outer flap. The latch tab remains unbroken. The outer flap shows a worn “US” stamp, where most of the “U” is gone. Another worn stamp is located down near the tab and in the shape of a rectangle. The interior flap is stamped “W.H. WILKINSON / MAKER / SPGFLD, MASS.” Both inner “ears” remain firmly sewn in place. The full chunk of fleece remains. No nipple pick inside. Brass finial on bottom. Both narrow belt loops remain in place on back and are stitched and riveted. All stitching is strong and intact.
The second cap pouch is also the pattern that has the integral closing tab as an extension of the outer flap. The latch tab remains unbroken. The outer flap is unmarked. The interior flap is marked with a “METZGER / PHILA” makers stamp and a “HARTZELL” sub-inspector stamp. Both inner “ears” are present; one remains firmly sewn in place, the other is loose. The full chunk of fleece remains with nipple pick inside. Brass finial on bottom. Both narrow belt loops remain in place, stitched and riveted.
An interesting original set. [jet][ph:L]
