This cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box. Outer flap exhibits light crazing; mostly on hinge area and lower corners. Outside edges of flap are tooled. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box with sliver of wood. Brass has nice semi-bright tone. Closing tab is sewn to underside of outer flap and is unbroken. Leather is soft and pliable.
The inner flap is unmarked with heavily crazed finish. This flap covers two cartridge tins that remain. The dividers were removed. This inner flap retains both “ears”. The implement pouch is present and also exhibits a heavily cracked surface finish. The stitching on the body of the box is tight and unbroken. Belt straps are sewn and riveted and show “pull” from use. Brass finial on the bottom. Iron buckles were removed. Box measures approximately 7 ¼” x 1 ¾” x 6” (for the .58 cal. elongated ball).
Of special interest is the remnants of a soldier’s stencil on the inside of the outer flap. Unfortunately rubbing and wear have made only random letters of the ink stencil readable, and not enough to allow us to read the name. The second line “Co. K, 1[##] N.Y.V.” is somewhat discernable. Perhaps a good research project for the collector with better eyes, or better filters for their camera.
A nice brass cartridge box plate on a box that saw use. [jet][ph:L]
