This carbine cartridge box is a used, original example. It is constructed of black bridle leather and marked on the inner flap with “DINGEE & LORIGAN MAKERS NEW YORK.” The interior features a drilled wooden block with the capacity to hold twenty paper cartridges or twenty metallic cartridges. Present in one hole of the block is a full Burnside brass cartridge.
When closed, the large leather outer flap and smaller inner flap protect the ammunition in the box. The outer flap has a mild scalloped front edge with minor crazing over its surface. Stitched and riveted to the bottom center edge of the outer flap is a leather closure tab that is supple and complete. All box stitching appears strong.
Inner flap has a heavily crazed surface that somewhat obstructs the makers mark but it is still readable. Both ears are still in place on the edges of the inner flap. Small implement pouch is sewn to the front of the box and is in good condition.
Both roller buckles are present on the bottom of the box as is the brass pear-shaped finial.
Reverse of the box has both belt loops in good condition. [ad] [ph:L]
