Box is for carrying the .58 caliber cartridge.
Outer flap is in excellent condition. The leather surface is very smooth and mostly clean with some minor edge wear. The remains of the broken latch tab are held to the flap by a single line of stitching only. The box has an oval “US” plate attached. The face of the plate is smooth and clean with a good “US” stamping. Surface has a nice mellow patina.
Inner flap has both ears and the leather surface is in nice condition. No tins are present inside the box. Implement pocket is complete and supple.
Bottom of the box has both roller buckles and a round brass finial. Despite having no tins, the box has kept its shape well.
Reverse has both the sling and belt loops with the belt loops being riveted and sewn. Loops are in nice condition.
Sling is still attached but does not match the leather of the box in appearance. Sling is solid but does have a decidedly worn look. The eagle breast plate is present and held to the sling by string. The face of the plate has a nice mellow patina. Reverse is clean with solid loops and a scratched initial “J” with some smaller letters. [sr] [ph:L]
