ILLINOIS MAKER MARKED PATTERN 1861 CARTIDGE BOX WITH PLATE

$395.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 490-5871

Outer flap is in fair condition. The surface has heavy crazing throughout and shows some surface finish loss. The latch tab is worn but solid and is held to the flap by a single line of stitching. The box has an oval “US” plate attached. The letters are crisply stamped and the face has a pleasing mixed patina. The plate is free of any major dings, dents, or scratches. Plate is still held to the box by a leather thong.

Inner flap has both ears and the leather surface is very smooth. The maker’s mark is on the edge of the inner flap and is stamped upside down. It reads “ROB’T TILLSON QUINCY, ILL.” Both tins are present with one missing its divider. Implement pocket is complete and in fair condition with some small amounts of surface finish loss.

Bottom of the box has both roller buckles and the pear-shaped brass finial.

Reverse has both the sling and belt loops with the belt loops being riveted and sewn. There is a crack in the leather just above the seam running across the back but it does not seem to affect the box in any way.

The surfaces of the box have a white residue throughout which is caused by the box being treated with a leather preservative. Some of this should come off by rubbing with a soft cloth. Implement pocket is near white in color due to this residue.  [ad] [ph:L]
