This cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box.
Outer flap exhibits moderate surface crazing but no significant loss. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box by two small pieces of leather thong. The brass face of the plate has an even mellow patina. Closing tab is a replacement; original tab was sewn with a single straight line of stitches. Below the plate and line of stitching there is a bold “U.S.” stamped in the leather; a marking rarely encountered on the cartridge boxes.
The inner flap is unmarked and is in similar condition as the outer flap. This flap covers two cartridge tins that remain. The two tins exhibit some rust and damage. This inner flap has had one of the “ears” replaced’ the other remains tightly attached. The implement pouch is present and complete. The stitching on the body of the box is tight and unbroken. There is a C.S. STORMS maker stamp of each side of the box. Belt straps are sewn and riveted. Brass finial on the bottom. Japanned roller buckles were sewn and riveted; both remain tightly attached. Waxy feel likely from leather preservative.
Box measures approximately 7.25” x 1.75” x 5” (for the .58 cal. elongated ball). The two tin inserts held musket cartridges.. [jet] [ph:L]
