This cartridge box is a Confederate copy of the US Pattern 1839 box but with obvious alterations.
The first difference is the outer flap. It is of the usual width but is cut short and is only long enough to cover the box opening. In fact, the outer flap is so short, that it only covers half of the inner flap below it. This outer flap has a straight line of stitching that once held a long latch tab approx. 1.50 inches wide. The tab is now gone but it would have had to have been at least 6.50 inches long in order to reach the carriage bolt finial at bottom to hold the box closed.
Secondly, the inner flap is of the usual size but is made out of a different leather than the box. It looks to be pig skin. The ears of the flap are missing. One edge shows the holes where it was originally sewn to the flap but the opposite edge shows none. Inner flap is pliable but does have one small hole near the right top. There are no tins inside the box.
The body of the implement pocket is present and is of the usual configuration but it is missing its flap. The holes from the stitching that anchored the flap can be seen. The pocket is made of the same leather as the inner flap and is pliable.
As stated earlier, the bottom of the box has a carriage bolt finial plus one roller buckle, the other is missing. The reverse of the box has both the sling and belt loops however both are sewn to the box, no rivets were used.
The shoulder strap has been fashioned from a rifle sling as evidenced by the adjustment holes visible on its surface and has been sewn directly to the sides of the box. It is complete and is still pliable.
This box has certainly seen use but has survived in good condition with the leather showing some surface dirt and crazing but the seams and sling are holding tight. [ad] [PH:L]
