The Pattern 1839 cartridge box was designed to hold 40 rounds of .69 caliber cartridges. These cartridges could be round ball, buck & ball, or buckshot, and were to be held in two tins fitted into the box.
The large outer flap of this box has some surface crackling but no flaking. Latch tab is a replacement. This box was never cut for the oval Pattern 1839 plate.
Inner flap and implement pocket are good but inside of box needs cleaning. Maker’s stamp, “R. DINGEE / N. YORK” is present. Both tins are missing. Bottom of the box has the finial and both roller buckles attached (one is starting to separate).
Back of the box has only sling loops, no belt loops, which is characteristic of the P1839 box. [jet] [PH:L]
