MAKER-MARKED CIVIL WAR “SHARPS” CARBINE CARTRIDGE BOX

Item Code: 2021-998

This carbine cartridge box is an original example of the classic leather accoutrement carried by Federal mounted forces during the Civil War. Sometimes referred to as the “Sharps” carbine box, Frederick Todd suggests it could have been with Sharps, Smith, and many other carbines. The distinctive features are the lack of roller buckles and the horizontal strap on the back. Constructed of strong, black bridle leather. When closed, the large leather outer flap and smaller inner flap protect the ammunition in the carbine box.

The strong outer flap has a mild scalloped front edge. A faint oval sub-inspector stamp is visible below the rivet. Leather remains flexible. Stitched and riveted to the center of the main flap is a leather closure tab that is complete and unbroken. Inner flap retains both side “ears”. Inner flap is stamped, “J. CUMMINGS / SPRINGFIELD / MASS”.  Inner flap closes over a small implement pouch sewn to the front of the box. There is no wood cartridge block.

Bottom of box has a brass finial but never had the roller buckles usually seen. On the back side there are two vertical leather belt loops without the single horizontal leather strip. One of the belt loops is broken at the top fold. All stitching remains strong and tight. A nice example of a Civil War Federal carbine cartridge box.   [jet] [ph:L]
