Box is the Type 1, Pattern of July 1864 with no interior flap. These were made only for a short time.
The box is in overall good condition. The outer flap has a nice “US” in an oval stamping and a solid latch tab that is attached with stitching and a single rivet. The surface of the leather is lightly crazed. Both ears are present.
The interior has both tins and a good implement pocket.
The body of the box is also good with little crazing. Pear shaped brass finial is present at bottom of the box as are both roller buckles. Belt loops on the reverse are sewn and riveted.
Sling is attached and though a bit stiff it is in good condition. It has light surface crazing like the box and is not cut for a breastplate which is correct for this pattern box. Sling is full length and strong. [ad]
