Standard issue, model 30 (1897) rear ammunition pouch as used by the Japanese Imperial Army throughout the World War Two. Pouch is approximately 6.75 inches long x 3.00 inches wide x 3.75 inches tall. Thick brown leather is in overall good condition with only light surface dirt from age, storage and use. All the seams are tight.
The stitched hinge top flap is secured by passing its leather tongue through a horizontal closure strap on the front of the box. Below the closure strap the tongue fastens to a brass finial which fits through a hole punched in the tongue. The underside of the top flap has markings done in kanji.
The interior of the box has dual pockets separated by a thick leather divider running front to back at center. The box would have held sixty rounds of 7.7mm ammunition. The bottom of each interior compartment has an oblong hole allowing for the passage of air and moisture.
The back of the box has two belt loops which are again, made of thick leather and riveted to the box. Loops are in excellent condition.
Attached to one end of the box is a japanned tin oil can with screw top. This is held to the box by two horizontal and one vertical strap. The vertical strap is punched with a hole that fits a finial on the lid of the can helping to hold it in place. The oil can itself is in good condition with some wear to the japanned surface. The worn areas do show some light surface dirt. The lid unscrews and becomes the handle of an oiling rod which still holds a cloth patch.
This is a very nice and complete example of a rare World War Two Japanese item. [ad]
