Soldiers armed with pistols required separate cartridge boxes. These show up in three sizes, which vary not by the caliber of the ammunition but the configuration of the packs that contained it. This is the middle size version that appears mid-war with a latch tab that is sewn and riveted, and the standard two belt loops on the reverse. Not intended to have magazine tins, the boxes have additional leather sections fixed inside that kept the cartridge packs in place by friction. The box is in very good condition and shows a small script “US” on the lower front flap. Other markings are not discernible, but this stamp is often paired with the inspection cartouche of T.J. Shepard on boxes made by J. Davy of Newark, NJ. This is an essential cavalry accouterment. Some verdigris on the belt loop rivets should be cleaned off. Otherwise it is in very good condition. [sr]
