The leather of this percussion cap box is in good condition overall with some crazing and flaking on the body. The outer flap shows light creases throughout and some minor surface finish loss, but the leather is strong and supple. The leather underneath has a smooth surface. The latch tab surface is similar to the flap surface. Tab is solid but has a small tear at the top of the hole.
The inner flap is complete with both ears. Stitching is tight. There is a maker’s mark that reads, “S. H. YOUNG & CO, NEWARK N. J.”. This mark was for Stephen H. Young of Newark, New Jersey.
The interior of the box has no remnants of the fleece lining. The pick is not present. The body of the box is strong and the brass finial is present at bottom.
The reverse is also good and has two complete belt loops which are held in place with copper rivets. [sl]
