Original leather cartridge box for infantryman of the 1864 pattern. Outer flap shows usual surface cracking and wear for age. Reproduction US cartridge box plate is tightly affixed to flap (over embossed US) by having its two brass loops bent over in back. Lower, right corner of flap has oval sub inspector’s stamp. Closing tab shows cracks in finish but is complete and unbroken and remains tightly stitched. Inner flap is in good condition, nice finish, retains both “ears”, and is clearly stamped “W.H. WILKINSON / MAKER / SP’NG’FD, MASS”. Implement pouch is likewise in very good condition. Both tins remain with the box. The two buckles on the bottom remain, and brass finial is solidly in place. Belt and shoulder strap loops on back remain in place and tightly stitched. Overall, the box is in good shape. A very good M1864 cartridge box for display. [jet]
