Leather cap box of the standard pattern issued by the Union army during the Civil War.
Exterior flap shows moderate to heavy crazing with only a little surface finish loss scattered throughout and on the latch tab which is in solid condition.
The interior flap has both ears and exhibits minor crazing near the top. At bottom center of this flap is a light, readable, maker’s mark of “GAYLORD / CHICOPEE / MASS.”
The body of the box has light surface wear and very minor crazing. There is no fleece or pick but there are 8 original percussion caps. The brass pear shaped finial is still present at bottom.
The reverse of the box has both of the original belt loops that show wear to match the rest of the leather. The back panel of the box is slightly concave with light deep crazing.
Gaylord was one of the more prolific makers of Union leather accoutrements and this box has definitely seen use. [AD]
