Although we cannot say for certain that this crudely manufactured accoutrement is Confederate, it certainly has the look. The box is attached to a 1.5” wide white cotton webbed belt with 3 thin green/brown embroidered border stripes. The box is crudely stitched to the belt.
From the side the box is oval in shape. It measures 3.5” x 3.5”. Both sides are constructed of oval disks of pine 3/8” thick. The leather body is nailed with early handmade tacks to the wood sides. A crudely made iron band encircles the entire box near the top with a protruding closure finial in front. The latch tab/cover is integral with the body leather. Remnants of a shoulder strap remain with an iron adjustment buckle. The belt measures approx. 39” long. Compartment is large enough for cartridges or a lot of percussion caps. [ss]
