After the Civil War, state sponsored militias were championed by Army and Navy veterans to maintain military readiness without committed enlistments. This is an example of a New York State belt used by militia in Long Island, New York in the late 1870’s – 1880’s.
The two-piece stamped brass buckle was clipped at the corners and a black filled stamped text reads “LONG ISLAND” with a decorative border at bottom. The reverse shows some minor tarnishing and oxidation. Both wire keepers are intact – one swivels and the other is stationary. The keeper is a single brass piece made of heavy wire. Most of the leather is still soft and supple with some crazing on both sides of the leather near where it attaches to the plate. Two embossed border lines traces the edges of the belt, while two lines of stitching affixes it to the keeper. The leather was folded and pressed into a 2” wide belt and stitched along a center seam on the reverse side. The stitching has come apart in three areas measuring 11.3”, 3.8” and 3.7”. A small edge section has been cut away along the right side, sometimes seen on belts used by mounted soldiers – a modification that prevented the top of the belt from cutting into the abdomen of the wearer. Overall length is 37.5”.
Overall, a neat piece of post-Civil War militia militaria. [cm][ph:L]

This is a very nice CDV photograph of Charles E. Crow in Confederate uniform. It appears to be a second-generation image; photo of an existing photo. Regardless, the picture is clear with good contrast. Crow wears a Confederate 2nd lieutenant's,… (1138-988). Learn More »
