INDIAN WARS PERIOD RHODE ISLAND OFFICER’S BELT AND BUCKLE

$225.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1216-200

Ca. 1870-1885 Rhode Island officer’s belt and plate. This is plate 843 in O’Donnell & Campbell who note that it appears in the 1885 Ames Sword Company catalog and that two different grades are known. This is a bright example and more finely detailed with the state seal of the anchor and “Hope” in a wreath inside a circular border with sunburst rays emanating all round. The wide tongue and belt loop are separately applied on the reverse. The blue and gold embroidered officer’s belt is in good condition, though a bit dark with a couple of spots where the fabric has loosened from the underlying leather.

The state adopted a version of the Hagner M1872 belt plate, about 1885 according to O’Donnell and Campbell, but as an officer’s plate this likely continued in use. Given the size of the state’s militia forces, however, and likely proportional small number of officers this would be scarce plate in any case.  [sr][ph:L]
