Offered here is a very nice Mexican War era 1839 pattern “baby” oval US waist belt and buckle. These early infantry plates mirrored the narrow belts worn by infantry during the Mexican War and into the 1850s.
Plate is constructed of die-struck sheet brass, lead filled, with a single brass arrowhead hook and clasp embedded in the lead. Stamped into the lead is “H.A. DINGEE”. Belt plate is in overall very good condition with nice age patina. Measures 70mm x 40mm.
Original buff leather belt measures 1.5” wide x 37” long overall with a fixed belt loop sewn to one end. Outer surface dyed black, inside left natural. Remnants of maker’s name “BOYD & SONS / MAKER / BOSTON” is stenciled on inside. A set of pen & ink initials is also inside.
These belt plates have always been a bit scarce, and here is one on its very nice original buff leather belt. [jet][ph:L]
