In good overall condition, this rig is a regulation Federal 1851 pattern plate on a replaced, original black bridle leather waist belt. The rectangular NCO 1851 pattern, cast brass plate with its brass keeper are in very good condition. Plate features an integral eagle motif with a one-piece nickel-silver laurel wreath on its face. Specimen exhibits the stippled background and features a spreadwinged eagle with a pennant in its beak and a shield on his breast. The tips of the silver wreath do not extend above the wingtips. Eagle holds an olive branch with its right talon and holds three arrows in the left talon. Entire plate face exterior surface exhibits a pleasing and mellow bronze patina. An integral narrow brass tongue rests on the reverse. Overall plate wear is average with worn down and smooth higher points of the feathers and the laurel wreath. Letters “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in the national motto are still visible but worn down. No maker’s mark but has the benchmark “78.”
Brass keeper on the belt is not marked and is secured in place by two copper rivets and three straight lines of stitching, all tight and intact. The black bridle leather belt is in good overall condition and measures approximately 38” long by 1¾” wide. Belt has been field modified with additional holes for the brass clasp hook. No maker’s stamp visible on the leather that is strong but has light creasing and crazing to the surface. No flaking. Belt still supple and strong. Belt has three leather belt adjuster loops, one near the plate, and two sliding loops, one with a brass D-ring and saber hook, and the other loop with just the D-ring. Loop stitching that secures the rings is weak and frayed on both loops. Strong Civil War leather belt and great M1851 NCO plate. [ra] [ph:L]
