Belt is the Pattern 1851 waist belt with the sewn loop on one end. Laid flat the leather belt meas. approx. 39.50 inches long x 1.75 inches wide. The end of the belt which has the sewn loop also has three size adjustment holes. This area of the belt has been reinforced with a 7.00-inch-long piece of leather taken from an officer’s or NCO’s belt. From the size and neatness of the stitching it appears that this reinforcement was done at an arsenal or some other supply depot. It does not look to be a field repair.
The leather has surface finish loss along the edges and gets a little heavier behind the plate. There are no weak spots or tears. Overall, the leather is strong.
The plate is the oval Pattern 1839 “US” with brass face and lead filled back. Plate has both “puppy paw” type attachments and tongue. Plate is in excellent condition with a very light patina and minor oxidation spots on the face while the reverse has smooth lead. [ad]
