This fine condition buff leather artifact is an original sword rig worn by Federal mounted artillerymen prior to and during the Civil War. Seldom seen in the collecting field today, this sword waist belt rig features a rectangular brass NCO 1851 pattern eagle belt plate and keeper, both long and short leather sword straps and the brass sword hook. Constructed of strong buff leather, this handsome belt measures 37" long and is 1¾" wide. The belt's buff finish has been dyed as per army regulations and exhibits a pleasing dark black surface overall. Leather is strong with no cracking, tears or weak areas. Belt is looped through the brass NCO plate and secured to the leather belt by means of a brass hook. A separate leather loop adjuster secures the connection.

Rig has matching benchmarks of "993" on both the belt plate and on the keeper. The brass keeper (hasp) is sewn to the opposite end of the leather belt. Stitched to the belt exterior near the keeper are two vertical leather tabs that hold brass rings. The rings support the long and the short leather sword straps that are looped through the scabbard suspension rings and secured with large, brass rivets. Long strap measures 22" long total while the short strap is 15" long total. Leather tab for the short strap has a period repair and has been restitched to the belt. Belt rig never had a shoulder strap.

The regulation 1851 pattern, brass, eagle waist belt plate is a rectangular, concave, and well-detailed accoutrement. Measuring 83 mm long x 50 mm high, the cast brass plate has an integral tongue on the reverse and a three-piece, nickel-silver wreath with the tips reaching just above the eagle's wings. Silver wreath strongly secured to the front face. Plate features a highly detailed, spread-winged raised eagle upon a stippled background facing to his right with a shield on his breast. Eagle grips an olive branch in his right talon and holds three arrows with his left. Face plate wears a very pleasing, untouched, dark patina and exhibits strong edges with even wear on all the high spots including shield device, stars and wing edges. All brass furniture wears a rich, mellow bronze patina.

This seldom-seen NCO artillery sword belt rig with its original rectangular M1851 eagle belt plate is a true and used veteran of the Civil War. In fine condition overall, this artifact is perfect for the mounted artilleryman's display or a Civil War leather collection
