This small, maker-marked, regulation 1839 pattern brass waist belt plate is one of the types used by various state and militia forces prior to and early into the Civil War. The variant design on these small plates made them unlikely to be contracted by the government. Nevertheless, a good number of states purchased these small US plates for their troops during the early part of the war.
Box plate measures 41mm x 71mm and is constructed of die-struck, rolled brass with a lead filled backing set with a brass belt hook and clasp. Plate face is in excellent condition and retains a pleasing, mellow bronze patina. No dings, but specimen has two tiny dark oxidation spots at the border near the letter “S”. They do not detract from its remarkable appearance. The specimen’s lead backing has the single brass arrowhead hook and clasp device, strong and tight. Lead itself is smooth, strong and free of erosion or blemishes. Back exhibits a fine, clear maker’s stamp that reads “E. GAYLORD.”
The bright buff leather belt is 32” long x 1¼” wide x 1/8” thick and is in excellent-plus condition. Wears just very light surface grime in spots but else clean, white and bright. Has the single white buff loop adjuster attached. No weak points or tears, nor any maker stamps. Here is a remarkable example of the small variant, regulation 1839 pattern brass oval waist belt plate from the pre and early Civil War period in outstanding condition. In addition, the seldom-seen white buff waist belt is in extraordinary condition and both would enhance any accoutrement or leather collection.
