NICE GRIMSLEY ARTILLERY SADDLE

Item Code: 2024-2384

This saddle fits the design characteristics of the Grimsley pattern 1844, 1847 and Artillery Driver saddles commonly used throughout the war by mounted servicemen, particularly within the artillery branch.

It is mostly complete, missing only the rectangular attachment loop at right rear and the stirrups.  The brass shields are securely attached with the rear missing one of the pins.  The front shield is prominently stamped “US” and the brass tag at the very front face is still secure with minimal tarnish. All stitching is strong throughout, with a very minor separation at the center rear seam where the quilting meets the bridle leather of the seat itself.  All button rivets are present and strong, while the stirrup straps show minor crazing to the outer finished layer.  The very heavy brass hook at the rear of the seat is also firmly attached.  The brass edge borders of the seat show only one small dent at front right where the piece begins its upward taper and minimal dulling of the once bright brass with no prominent tarnishing. Outer layers of leather have given to a shade of black-brown and show some finish wear.

Likely a wartime manufactured saddle that incorporated elements of several designs, this saddle would display beautifully among any collection of Civil War memorabilia and would be a perfect item for the equestrian and artillery enthusiast.    [cm][ph:L]
