A Cavalry shoulder sling designed for use with weapons fitted with sling rings (musketoon, rifled carbine, and all of the patented breech-loading carbines). The sling was to be worn over the left shoulder with its buckle to the back. These slings were used extensively throughout the Civil War and well into the post-war period of the Indian wars as well.
This specimen is constructed of a black bridle leather belt measuring 2 3/8” wide by approximately 54” in length. The steel swivel and snap-hook device is unmarked. The large rectangular brass buckle and brass sling tip remain well secured. The buckle is sewn but not riveted. The brass parts are clean with mostly bright tone.
The condition of the leather is fair. Leather remains very supple but exhibits substantial surface cracking with some loss of finish overall. Leather is unmarked. A solid and complete carbine sling. [jet][ph:L]
