A fine example of the Cavalry shoulder sling designed for use with weapons fitted with sling rings (musketoon, rifled carbine, and all of the patented breech-loading carbines). The sling was to be worn over the left shoulder with its brass buckle to the back. These slings were used extensively throughout the Civil War and well into the post-war period of the Indian wars as well.
This specimen is constructed of a black bridle leather belt measuring 2 3/8” wide by approximately 50” in length. The steel swivel and snap-hook device is unmarked. The large rectangular brass buckle and brass sling tip remain well secured. The buckle is sewn and riveted. The brass parts are clean.
The condition of the leather is excellent and very supple. Tooled edges, no maker stamps, just the number “88” near the brass tip. A very nice and complete carbine sling. [jet] [ph:L]
