This is a leather sling for use with Civil War-era rifle muskets. This is a Pattern 1857 musket sling which was originally designed for the US Model 1855 rifle musket, and subsequently saw use with the Model 1861 and Model 1863 rifle muskets.
The sling has a fixed leather loop at one end and a flat brass hook on the other, which was retained by two brass brads and a sewn flap at the end of the sling. The hook engaged one of the holes along the length of the sling, which allowed the length to be adjusted. There still is a sliding leather loop but its stitching has separated. The sling is approximately 40” long overall including the brass hook.
This is clearly stamped “C.S. STORMS / MAKER / NEW YORK CITY” and “U.S.” near the hook end.
This sling is in very good condition with only light wear. This sling obviously came off of a musket as it is folded and retains its “on the musket” shape. It is supple enough to be placed on a musket one more without damage. As it is now, the sling will fit on a M1861 or M1863 rifle musket with swivels approximately 20.5” apart.
This sling should be installed on a rifle musket to enhance the display of the weapon. [jet] [ph:L]
