This is a Cavalry shoulder sling designed for use with weapons fitted with sling rings (musketoon, rifled carbine, and all patented breech-loading carbines). The sling was to be worn over the left shoulder with its buckle to the back.
This specimen is constructed of a bridle leather belt measuring 2 ¼” wide by approximately 53” in length with hardware of a steel swivel and snap-hook device used to attach it to the carbine ring. Snap hook is unmarked. Also present is a large rectangular brass adjustment buckle and brass sling end tip. The buckle is sewn only. These slings were used extensively throughout the Civil War and well into the post-war period of the Indian wars as well. The condition of the leather is soft and supple with some crazing and loss of surface finish. The leather has been heavily treated with a leather preservative.
This is a solid example of a Civil War cavalry accessory. [jet] [ph:L]
