This is a good example of the Austrian bayonet frog used with bayonet scabbard for the quadrangular-blade socket bayonet of the M1854 Austrian Lorenz. The Lorenz was well regarded and imported by both sides in the Civil War in numbers exceeded only by the various British P1853 Enfields. These bayonet frogs differ from the American versions in accommodating the Austrian oval, wood body scabbard that featured an iron throat cap and button with long tip to pass through the hole and secure it. Along with the scabbard these provide an instructive comparison to the American adaptations. [sr] [ph:m/l]
