Offered here is a very nice example of the Pattern 1839 white buff leather cartridge box sling. This sling measures 2” wide and approximately 72” long. Leather remains strong and supple.
Much of surface is covered with whitewash that was applied to present a “clean” appearance. Some of the original tooling along the edges is visible nearer the ends where the whitener was not applied. The narrow ends of the strap are in excellent shape with no breaks or tears from the roller buckles.
The underside retains the original buff color with only light soiling from age and use. “J.M. French. / ‘I’ Co” is clearly written twice in pen & ink on the underside. Unfortunately, “French” is almost as bad as “Smith” or “Jones” when researching Civil War soldier’s records so no further identification is available.
This is an exceptionally nice Pattern 1839 cartridge box sling in white buff leather. [jet]
