It’s tough to find a pair of Civil War cavalry saddlebags that are not damaged. Usually the yoke is broken, the straps torn or the seams on the bags have given way. This set is in great condition. The yoke is intact with no tears and still has each locking strap that would pass through the brackets on the rear of the saddle. The center hole for the saddlebag stud is likewise in good condition. Bags are frequently broken at this point from wear or careless handling by someone who folding them too tightly. The covers of the bags are a little stiff and show some crazing from flexing and some wrinkling, but aside from some minor rubs have no finish loss. In addition, the latch tabs are full length and in place along with the buckles, and the tie-down loops and buckles are there as well. These are often broken or cut off. The bags are sewn and riveted to the yoke, but the straps and buckles are secured with stitching only, which some would take as a sign of early manufacture. The inner pockets and seams are excellent. Interior pocket laces are not there, but the lacing holes are not stressed there may never have been laces in them.
This is superior set of McClellan saddlebags that would dress up any cavalry collection or display of Civil Ware horse gear. [SR]
