A nice example of the early Dragoon / Cavalry shoulder sling designed for use with weapons fitted with sling rings (musketoon, rifled carbine, and all of the patented breech-loading carbines). The sling was to be worn over the left shoulder with its buckle to the back.
This specimen is constructed of a buff leather belt measuring 2 ¼” wide by approximately 53” in length with hardware of a steel swivel and snap-hook device used to attach it to the carbine ring. Also present is a large rectangular brass adjustment buckle and brass sling end tip. The buckle is sewn and riveted. These slings were used extensively throughout the Civil War and well into the post-war period of the Indian wars as well. The condition of the leather is excellent and supple. The brass parts feature a dark bronze patina and the iron hook likewise has an appealing dark patina. Stenciled on the inside of the belt (slightly worn) is “3 PA Co C”.
The 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment (also known as the 60th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers or Young's Kentucky Light Cavalry) was a cavalry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The unit was recruited by Colonel William H. Young at Philadelphia during July and August 1861. As companies were formed, they were immediately sent to Camp Park in Washington, DC, for outfitting and training. The regiment was initially named the Kentucky Light Cavalry in an effort to influence citizens of that border state to remain in the Union. The regiment served in the Army of the Potomac through the Civil War, losing a total of 169 men. It became part of the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry May 8, 1865. A monument recognizing the unit stands east of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania at the East Cavalry Battlefield.
This is a rare dragoon/cavalry accessory in nice condition. [jet]
