A superb example of the early Dragoon / Cavalry shoulder sling designed for use with weapons fitted with sling rings (musketoon, rifled carbine, and all of the patented breech-loading carbines). The sling was to be worn over the left shoulder with its buckle to the back.
This specimen is constructed of a buff leather belt measuring 2 3/8” wide by approximately 53” in length with hardware of a steel swivel and snap-hook device used to attach it to the carbine ring. Also present is a large rectangular brass adjustment buckle and brass sling end tip. The buckle is sewn and riveted. These slings were used extensively throughout the Civil War and well into the post-war period of the Indian wars as well. The condition of the leather is excellent and very supple. The metallic parts are clean and free verdigris. There is a two-line maker’s mark stenciled on the inside of the belt which is not completely legible with the bottom line possibly reading “NEWARK”.
This is a rare dragoon/cavalry accessory in wonderful condition. [jet]
