This saddle is unmarked and was found in central Pennsylvania. The leather is mostly clean and supple. Saddle is complete with skirts and stirrups.
The tree is covered with two layers of leather on top. The lower layer forms the skirts and the upper forms the seat. Measuring shows it to be a 12-inch seat. The surface of the seat is quilted in an attractive scalloped pattern throughout. Pommel is attached at front with iron tacks. The back of the cantle has two early oval iron rings attached.
Hanging by each side are the wide wooden stirrups. Stirrups are hooded with leather that is attached by iron tacks.
The underside of the saddle is padded with a white and blue stripped bed-ticking material. Edges show some light wear from age and use.
The leather throughout the saddle shows light wear, surface dirt and minor crazing. Examining the leather and iron on the piece shows that it was stored in a good environment. The iron has darkened but not really rusted and the leather is not dry and stiff but very pliable. Also, all seams are tight.
This is a wonderful 19th Century saddle in very nice condition. [ad]
