This artifact is a leather and brass accoutrement often referred to as a sword or saber hanger strap that was used by mounted troops from post Civil War until the turn of the century. The hanger strap specimen is made up of a brass carry device with two black bridle leather sword straps, one long and one short, attached. The brass device is a hook arrangement designed to slip over and fit a trooper's sword waist belt. Device had two integral slots that suspended a riveted leather sword strap in each. Other end of the strap was looped to fit through the cavalryman's carry rings of his sword scabbard. Brass hook device is unmarked and has acquired a dirty bronze patina. Both leather straps are ½" wide and in good condition. Leather is unmarked save for initials "N.G.U." stamped into the longer strap. Leather suffers from light surface crazing and scuffing.
