The primary usage of a set of Hames/Haines was that of a heavy-draft harness, to which the trace chains are fastened. They are usually found attached over the collar device of horses or mules aligned on Artillery teams. Both of these examples consist of two curved iron bars as well as iron (Swivel) attachment hardware and protective leather flaps, plus adjusting straps with buckles.
This set is in excellent condition, considering it’s age. The leather components are still very supple, with some signs of surface crazing. The overall surface finish of the iron hardware is darkened with age and there is some random pitting present. Also, there are manufactures markings stamped into each of the iron frames, which read: SHORT U.S.A. BEMIS & CALL Co. SPRINGFIELD MASS.
