In good honest condition overall, this Civil War artifact is a set of Federal army regulation M1859 McClellan leather saddlebags. No arsenal or maker markings are visible on either bag. Saddlebags are made of black bridle leather and remain strong with almost all of its original cavalry leather straps and equipments. Both the near side and off side saddlebags are in good condition and retain the narrow exterior leather closure straps as well as the black japanned buckles and clasps on each bag face. However, the closure strap on the near side outer flaps has completely broken away but is still with the bags. Closure tab on far side bag has broken away and remains with the body. All straps are supple and show surface creasing and cracking. All straps are stressed and remain tightly stitched to the bag.
Leather inner pockets on both bags are stiff but intact. Leather expandable bottoms of both bags are supple, but free of tears, breaks and perforations, in all, in very good original condition. Far-side exterior leather bag surface suffers from moderate cracking and some light flaking with light edge scuffing. No visible worm damage on the leather. All stitching is original and remarkably tight and strong with no fraying. Leather carry cantle strap is strong and intact with its original short leather side straps. Carry strap shows fair to moderate creasing. Center hole opening at the top of cantle carry strap where it secured to the saddle cantle area is slightly torn. Military Civil War saddlebags are difficult to find.
This leather artifact presents a remarkable opportunity to acquire an original set of good condition M1859 regulation McClellan saddlebags at a great price.
