Pair of U.S. Cavalry saddle bags associated with the pattern 1859 McClellan issue saddle.
This example is of the Civil War era, being stamped with a government sub-inspector’s cartouche (which is only partially visible). The leather body and straps are still supple, but have a crazed surface finish. All bag stitching is tight and intact. The buckles and straps located on the flaps and bags are present. Leather cross strap that connects both bags show signs of heavy wear and has overall crazing to the surface finish as well as two areas which have cut through slices. A well used pair and would do a nice as a display item.
