This is a gold bullion-embroidered cap insignia worn on the kepis of many Civil War Federal infantry officers. Made of gold and dead false bullion thread on a black velvet background, device the familiar ‘horn’ or ‘bugle’ design that signifies the infantry branch of service. The small (2” long) officer’s cap insignia exhibits a bullion horn attached to a small pasteboard oval disc covered in black velvet. Bullion threading of the brass bugle, including the ornamental tassels wrapped around the twist, is slightly loose as are threads near the horn’s bell. The bullion horn loop area shows where a small regimental number, now missing, may have been glued to the device. In good overall original condition, this is a hard to find artifact at a great price that would be worthy of any Civil War insignia collection.
