Presented here is a regulation Civil War staff officer’s cloth bullion ‘wreath’ insignia for a cap or slouch hat. This beautiful, well-executed, embroidered hat and cap ornament is of the larger regulation size and is stitched on rectangle-shaped material of black (now faded to brown) cloth that is backed with a thicker woven cloth base. A fine, large-size gold and dead bullion wreath partially surrounds two, silver, 3/8” high bullion letters “U.S”. Outer dimensions of the bullion wreath measure 2¾” wide by 1 ¾” high while the black cloth measure 3½” long x 2½” wide. Gold wreath free of any pulls, fraying or blemishes. Black cloth backing shows minor moth nips and some edge fraying. No loop fasteners. The US Staff Officer’s cloth cap insignia is a nice example of the regulation hat device worn by Federal officers prior to, during, and after the Civil War
