This Napoleonic enlistedman’s plate is the Infantry Model of 1810 which was in use until 1815 well after the introduction of the more recognizable but shorter used Model 1812 with the eagle surmounting the amazon shield. This plainer stamped brass plate made for the 103rd Regiment of the Line measures 4 1/2 inches in height by 4 inches in breadth. It was once in the famous collection of J. Stanley Scwartz of Montreal Canada. It was found in the 1950s at the site of the Siege of Badajos in Spain. In the Siege of Badajoz (March 16th to April5t, 1812), also called the third siege of Badajoz, an Anglo-Portuguese Army under the command of the Arthur Wellesley, the Earl of Wellington (who was later made Duke of Wellington) besieged Badajoz, Spain, and forced the surrender of the French garrison. The patina is deep as dug, and the condition is perfect. [pe][ph:L]
