Gilt, stamped, rolled brass hat plate with the Virginia state seal with the goddess Virtue dressed as an Amazon at center standing over the slain tyrant with the motto “Sic Semper Tyrannis” above and “Virginia” below. Two brass loops for attachment to the hat are still soldered in place on the reverse. These are appropriate for a low crown shako as worn by military academies and likely by some militia units in full dress, likely dating mid-19th to early 20th century. VMI hat plates are similar, but in the modern configuration with the letters of that institution fixed along the top edge. This was likely intended for broader usage with varied, separate lettering if desired. This has a pleasant, aged patina to the brass with some gilt visible in recesses on the face and brighter color on the reverse where it would have been subject to less wear and oxidation. There are no bends or breaks. [sr] [ph:L]
