This is a high-grade bullion embroidered insignia showing a flaming bomb, shell and flame, or flaming grenade superimposed on a pair of crossed cannons. In the US army the Ordnance Department in the early years fell under the artillery as a branch of service, and was only assigned the flaming bomb as its specific branch of service insignia in 1851, so this design could be understood as a manifestation of that, though the motif of the flaming bomb was in general use as a decorative element on coat tails since 1832 and had a long history, dating back to the early 1700s, of more general use from its association with grenadiers as elite military troops. This would not be a regulation US army insignia then, but could well be adopted by a militia or state organization. It is made, like other embroidered insignia of the period of gilt bullion thread and coiled wire on a black background. The use of black rather than dark blue might reflect the change seen in staff insignia and the like with the introduction of the dress hat to replace the shako in 1858, but as with most militia, state, or simply non-regulation insignia, all bets are off.

The condition is excellent. The color of the bullion and the ground are strong. We see no moth bites or mouse chews. The edges of the patch are good. The backing shows some wear and losses along with a collector’s or dealer’s cost and pricing codes.  [sr][ph:L]
