In 1862 there was a drill competition held in the Army of the Potomac. The winning regiments were to receive fancy French Chassuer uniforms. The winners of the competition were the 62nd, 83rd Pennsylvania & the 18th Massachusetts. Part of the uniform they received was a leather shako with stamped brass front plate.
This is a plate from one of those shakos. At center is an infantry hunting horn insignia on a black painted field. The black paint shows several small chips. A large wreath of oak leaves surrounds this central design, which is surmounted by a spread-winged eagle with a painted US shield on his chest. The paint on the shield is in good condition.
Reverse has two brass wires for attaching. [ad] [ph:L]
