Here we have a famous image of a seated President Lincoln, which was taken by famed photographic artist, Alexander Gardner, in February of 1861 while he worked in Matthew Brady’s Washington, D.C. Portrait Gallery. One of the earliest views of a bearded President Lincoln, he is seated at a small table; his top hat rests upside down next to an inkwell stand.
There are some minor spots of dirt throughout. The corners of the mount have been clipped. Overall, this is a nice image with good contrast and clarity.
The reverse of this CDV bears the E.H. & T. Anthony backmark. Below it reads: “from photographic negative in Brady’s National Portrait Gallery,” which shows that this image was printed directly from one of Brady’s negatives produced his D.C. gallery.
The reverse shows minor foxing and soiling at the edges. [CLA] [PH:L]
