Heavily embroidered narrow bodied epaulettes with wide ends also known as “wings.”

The top surface of these epaulets is a dark blue/black cloth with a very heavy, raised oak leaf decoration done in gold bullion wire, sequins and thread. The edges of the epaulettes have a double border. The outer one is done in tight gold bullion thread sewn diagonally while the inner is done with gold bullion thread with sequins throughout.

The apex of each epaulette has a one piece Marine Corps button that is identified as MC5C in Albert’s button book (TICE MC206A1.) The reverse of each button has a shank surrounded by 8 six-pointed stars with alternating dots. The buttons are attached by an eye-splice knot on a long white string that passes through the eye of the epaulette.

The wide end of each epaulette has the typical gold bullion tassels of the larger variety.

The underside of the items are padded and have a yellow polished cotton lining with black cloth ties to secure to the uniform.

The overall condition is excellent. The gold bullion thread has darkened with age but is not torn or broken and none is missing. Bullion tassels show some wear from age and storage but none are broken or pulled. Tie strings are all present but slightly worn at ends.

A notation in Tice says that he believes the style of buttons on these epaulettes were ordered by the Marine Corps in the 1830’s.  [ad]  [ph:L]
