Here we have a Civil War engineer’s hat insignia for an enlisted man in the 1851 Pattern. Regulation states that these turreted castle insignia are made of die-struck brass and measure 1 5/8 inches wide by 1 ¼ in height. This one, due to die variants measures approximately 1 5/8 inches by just under 1 ¼. The battlements on the center turret are enclosed and the doorway is also shut, again, due to variants in the die but still considered regulation for the 1851 pattern. The two brass wire loops are intact on the reverse.
This insignia is in good strong condition with a few minor spots of tarnish to the metal. No breaks or pushes to the metal are present. The hooks remain strongly affixed.
This insignia is a great example of a regulation Civil War engineer’s hat insignia. [cls] [ph:L]
