This is a good example of the regulation hat insignia for an officer of infantry, indicated by the bugle or hunting horn constructed of gold bullion embroidery on a black velvet ground. The insignia shows some signs of wear and actual use, with some rubbing around the periphery, some very tiny stains, and one small wear spot at right center at the upper edge of the horn’s loop. The horn is detailed by the use of both twisted and coiled bullion strands and the use of sequins, indicating both the bell and mouthpiece of the horn, and a bugle cord with tassels. The only missing element is one of the small tassels, where the bullion strand ends and a thread shows, but this is hardly noticeable unless you start looking for it. The jaceron wire border is in place, as is the polished cotton backing, and both metal loops, secured to an inner plate, for fastening it the hat.
This would make a nice addition to a display of officer’s field gear, uniforms and insignia. It would look great with a regulation sash and officer’s sword. The small signs of field use make it more interesting in some ways that a mint, unworn example. [sr] [ph:m]
