This is an extremely nice Civil War hat insignia for an artillery officer. The heavy gold bullion embroidery retains very nice, subdued gold tones with only a couple of spots of oxidation or light verdigris. The cannon barrels are detailed by the use of twisted as well as coiled strands of bullion embroidery and the center is an open circlet with wide border containing the brass numeral “3” on a black velvet ground like main background. The patch is oval, with an internal stiffener supporting its shape and holding two loops that protrude through the polished cotton backing to allow it to be held on the hat by a thong or wedges. All the fabric is very good and the seam of the face and back is tight, as is the gold jaceron wire border. The number 3 may designate the regiment to which the officer belonged or to the number of the battery in cases like New York, which fielded not only regiments of heavy and light artillery, whose companies might serve independently, but also independent batteries that were designated numerically in a separate series.
This is a scarce piece of insignia in excellent condition. [sr] [ph:m]
