This is a beautiful example of the regulation U.S. infantry officer’s hat insignia made with an internal stiffener and fitted with two loops for attachment to the officer’s version of the M1858 Army Hat, more frequently known as the Hardee hat. This is a very high-end version, closely following the original illustrations in the Horstmann illustrated edition of the 1851 uniform regulations showing not only definition of the hunting horn bell with sequins, but a row of sequins along the tube to imitate highlights.
The bullion has nice color, just slightly muted from age, and the black background is also very good, with no moth damage and deep color. The brown, polished cotton backing is present and very good, showing just some small pulls near on of the fastening loops. We see no indication of a jaceron wire border, but they were usually lightly tacked on and if removed by accident or intention frequently leave no sign.
Officers sometimes supplemented these with small silvered regimental numerals inside the loop of the horn. An early date of manufacture for this is suggested not only by its high quality but the smaller opening of the loop the might permit a one or two digit regimental designation, but three only with difficulty, though photographs show that many officers did not add them.
This is a choice example that combines history and visually appeal, and would be difficult to improve upon. It would add to an officer’s display or a specialized collection of embroidered insignia. [sr] [ph:m]
